Munich Re Trainee Programme Explore

Lars von Lackum, ERGO International AG

EXPLORE is our international Group Trainee Programme for future management positions in the insurance business. Over a period of 24 months this cross-divisional trainee programme allows Trainees to explore four different companies under the umbrella of Munich Re (Group). They will gain valuable insights into the insurance business as a whole as well as into the specific aspects of reinsurance, primary insurance and asset management. The Group Trainee Programme is tailored to give future leaders a firm professional grounding and provide Munich Re (Group) with top talents.

Lars von Lackum, Member of the Board at ERGO International AG, will visit the Munich Re's stand at the World Business Dialogue in Cologne on 17 March. He’s looking forward to meet Munich Re’s next generation of young executives. Before the event, Andrea Rabus and Robert van der Ven from ERGO’s Learning & Development Unit talked to him about his own career and the perspectives for new Trainees.

Robert van der Ven:

Hi Lars, we will be meeting you at the World Business Dialogue in Cologne on 17 March where we will introduce our Munich Re Trainee Programme. Could you please highlight what makes our international Trainee Programme “Explore” attractive for potential candidates?

Lars von Lackum:

I am looking forward to meet Munich Re’s next generation of young executives. Our international Trainee Programme “Explore” focuses on gaining top talents. We believe it to be quite unique since it allows participants to explore four fields of Business - Munich Re, ERGO, Munich Health, MEAG - under the umbrella of Munich Re Group in different national and international business units. Besides the widespread training on the job, individual training off the job gives the opportunity for personal development and rounds off the holistic development of our high potentials in the Munich Re Group.

Andrea Rabus:

Currently you are member of the Board of ERGO International. How did you reach this position? What were important steps in your career?

Lars von Lackum:

After finishing my business studies here in Cologne, I started my career with a leading in-house consulting firm, but quit after three months. Not a brilliant start for a career! I restarted at the office of one of the big four audit companies and I had the great luck to work in a young motivated team. After gaining first insights into a great number of companies, I applied as Corporate Finance Manager at Munich Re Group, known to be one of the best employers in the Munich market. Luckily I got hired and after collecting more than seven billion euros in different capital market Transactions, in 2003 I became Executive Assistant to the Group CFO, the Chief Financial Officer. I then built up a new unit for Data Management and Financial Reporting before leaving the Group for around five years. As CFO and later on as Deputy Spokesman of the Management Board I worked for one of the big real estate asset management companies in Europe. However, I came back to Munich Re Group in May 2013, as it was offering the chance to head the Strategy and Strategic Marketing unit of ERGO, the primary insurance entity.

Robert van der Ven:

What do you offer to trainees who will join ERGO International for one of their assignments?

Lars von Lackum:

ERGO is present in more than 30 countries worldwide. At ERGO International, you will come into contact with the entire bandwidth of insurance business. Besides the broad range of operative topics as sales, claims management, product development and underwriting, we have a lot of strategic areas. Especially company steering, the management of existing portfolio and the development of new markets are in focus of our everyday work. One of our highlights is the focus on digitalisation and innovation. These topics are mainly driven by our Digital Lab in Berlin and our Startup bootcamp in London. We want to bring together our financial solidity and business skills with entrepreneurial thinking and action to find new and innovative solutions. Thus trainees have the chance to get a valuable insight into our international developments.

Andrea Rabus:

That’s sounds very interesting! Thank you and see you in Cologne!
